In OCTAVIA, STAYCEE PEARL dance project examines Butler’s work and life story;
her insecurities, self doubt, and triumphs; juxtaposing her persona with her stories, layering her experience with that of a composite of characters. Finding similarities in character personalities, powers, adventures, and moods, the Pearls create a world colored by Butler’s story telling sensibilities and an interpretation of Butler’s own life. From this research,they developed movement and gestures, a general path, sound, and environment that gives us a glimpse into Butler’s world from a dance/multi-media prospective, bring these magical worlds into physical form.

Octavia is made possible by the generous support of
the Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh fund of the Pittsburgh
Foundation and the Heinz Endowments,the Heinz Small Arts Initiative, and the
Kelly-Strayhorn Theater.
